For a long time I dismissed dubstep thinking it was a short-lived fad popularized by teenage hipsters at drug-infested raves, but then I listened to Skrillex and my mind was blown. This music isn’t like Sufjan Stevens or Bon Iver where you sit down in a quite room, sip red wine, and ponder about love, life, and loss. Dubstep is music where you have to turn off your brain and just feel the electronic rhythms pumping through your veins. Rather than an intellectual or emotional journey, dubstep is a primal experience. Sure the beats might be very similar to each other and very repetitive across every song in the genre, but that is the point because this music about being in a trance. It’s about that guaranteed and predictable rush of audible bliss that you will get every time the speakers are blasting.
